Gerdts and Carol Lowrey. Jonas Lie (1880-1940). New York: Spanierman Gallery, 2005, pp. 35, 64-65 color illus., no. 13 Painted in 1922, Northern Hills probably depicts the area in or near the town of Saranac Lake, New York, in the Adirondacks, which Lie visited in 1921 and where he resided year-round in 1923-24. His practice of painting directly in the outdoors during the winter can be strongly felt in this work, in the subtle observations of sunlight filtering over the hillcrests and the artist's robust brushwork, adjusted to convey the distinctive nature of each of his forms. Lie's love of sites such as this are reflected in his statement that "All the keys and chords and harmonies of my work come from the North." C The Spanierman Gallery, LLC
