New York: Spanierman Gallery, 2005, pp. 35, 68-69 color illus., no. 15 After emigrating from his native Norway to the United States in 1893, Jonas Lie studied in New York City at the National Academy of Design, Cooper Union, and the Art Students League. Influenced by the work of the Eight and that of fellow Norwegian Frits Thaulow, he developed a robust style combining realism and Impressionism. His Norwegian upbringing inspired his passion for capturing the awe-inspiring beauty of the Adirondack mountains, and such images of this subject as First Thaw provide a convincing argument for keeping this area "forever wild." Capturing the stillness and the sunlight illuminating a distant mountain pass, Lie expresses a reverence for this landscape that evokes the spirit of the Hudson River School.
