Gerdts and Carol Lowrey. Jonas Lie (1880-1940). New York: Spanierman Gallery, 2005, pp. 30, 104-105, no. 33, illus. Lie's oeuvre includes many landscapes, as well as urban and industrial scenes and the occasional still life and figure subject. Yet, as noted by one critic in 1925, "Almost better than the land he depicts the sea, the boats and the sea-men." As revealed by paintings such as Into the Sunset, Lie's mature aesthetic was informed by the tenets of Post-Impressionism, with its emphasis on simplified shapes, controlled designs, and bold hues applied in an arbitrary manner. In keeping with many of his seascapes, here Lie repeats the various shapes of the boats to create lively patterning--a reflection of the legacy of his early employment at the Manchester Mills in New York City, where he made designs for calico shirts, and of his interest in Norse tapestries and peasant arts and crafts.
