Jonas Lie (1880-1940). New York: Spanierman Gallery, 2005, pp. 92-93 color illus., no. 27. Born in Norway, Lie spent his early years in Paris and moved to New York in 1893. After at first studying music, he decided to become an artist, enrolling at the Art Students League. In forming his aesthetic, he drew inspiration from the work of fellow Norwegian Frits Thaulow as well as from the realist art of the Eight. Old Wharves, Maine exemplifies Lie's lifelong fascination with nautical themes, which he rendered in the broad, painterly style that he came to prefer. This striking view of a Maine harbor is a spirited celebration of light, atmosphere, and color. C The Spanierman Gallery, LLC Collection of American Art
