Gerdts and Carol Lowrey. Jonas Lie (1880-1940). New York: Spanierman Gallery, 2005, pp. 30, 90-91 color illus., no. 26 A native of Moss, Norway, Jonas Lie studied art in Paris and New York. He went on to establish a national reputation for his depictions of New York City and the New England coast, rendered in a dynamic style combining elements of realism and impressionism. Painted during a trip he took to the Lofoten Islands in northern Norway in 1925, The Fleet reveals Lie's penchant for robust brushwork and rich, expressive colors, as well as his enduring fascination with boats and the sea. While sitting in the open window of a fisherman's hut under the Arctic Circle, Lie described a scene similar to that in The Fleet to his dealer Robert Macbeth. He wrote of observing a harbor "crowded with red-sailed fishing craft, and close upon them rise sheer mountain walls from the green sea." C The Spanierman Gallery, LLC
