Printed by Otto Felsing & Co., Berlin Catalog raisonné: Rief 45 II a (of II c) Plate dimensions: 33.8 x 23.8 cm Good condition Heinrich Vogeler belongs to the most important German illustrators and ex libris artists, whose early work was influenced by Art Nouveau and then developed into a style coined by Futurism; the auction record for an etching by the artist is currently set at €4,000 This etching from 1909 is one of 30 copies of the second and final state, which were printed on Japan paper by the printer Otto Felsing. Heinrich Vogeler has depicted here in fine etching line several men, dressed in fur-lined coats men in a snowy landscape and aptly captured the wintry atmosphere. The etching is signed lower right in pencil 'HVogeler', and monogramed in the plate lower left 'H.V.'. The sheet is in good condition with occasional small creases. The plate measures 33.8 x 23.8 cm, the sheet 43.2 x 32.2 cm. Heinrich Vogeler (1872-1942) In 1890 Heinrich Vogeler began studying at the Academy in Dusseldorf. After several study trips and a first stay in Worpswede interrupted his studies, he graduated in 1895 and settled in the Barkenhoff in Worpswede. Here he co-founded the Worpswede artist association. Soon first exhibitions followed and Vogeler traveled to England and Italy. In addition to furniture he designed jewelry, porcelain for the porcelain manufactory Meissen and silver work for M.H. Wilkens in Bremen. During World War I he served as an intelligence officer on the Eastern Front. In the 1920s Vogeler regularly traveled to Russia. Together with George Grosz and John Heartfield he was a founding member of the 'Assoziation revolutionärer bildender Künstler Deutschlands' in 1928. His work of the 1930s exhibits anti-fascist tendencies. Today Heinrich Vogeler is considered one of the most important graphic artists and illustrators of German Art Nouveau.
