One sheet shows a Galician landscape with three young men in a field. The second sheet depicts two peasant women doing their washing by the waterhole. The drawings were probably made while Vogeler was stationed as an intelligence officer on the Eastern Front. With fine dynamic lines the artist created two scenes, which feature a harmonious coloring. The artist's multi-faceted oeuvre includes not only paintings, prints and applied arts but also numerous drawings from this time portraying the rural life in Poland, Ukraine and Russia. The drawings are overall in good condition. Both are laid on a mat. The paper is slightly waved. Sheet 1 with a tiny paper loss to the left upper corner. Each drawing is monogrammed lower right 'H.V.' and bears the artist's signum. The works are inscribed with inventory number 'LR 2263 a' and 'b' respectively (Ludwig Roselius, Founder of the company 'Kaffee HAG'). The frame shows slight signs of wear, it measures 57.5 x 43.5 cm, the drawings measure 13.7 x 19.1 cm and 13.2 x 19.1 cm respectively. Heinrich Vogeler (1872-1942) In 1890 Heinrich Vogeler began studying at the Academy in Dusseldorf. After several study trips and a first stay in Worpswede interrupted his studies, he graduated in 1895 and settled in the Barkenhoff in Worpswede. Here he co-founded the Worpswede artist association. Soon first exhibitions followed and Vogeler traveled to England and Italy. In addition to furniture he designed jewelry, porcelain for the porcelain manufactory Meissen and silver work for M.H. Wilkens in Bremen. During World War I he served as an intelligence officer on the Eastern Front. In the 1920s Vogeler regularly traveled to Russia. Together with George Grosz and John Heartfield he was a founding member of the 'Assoziation revolutionärer bildender Künstler Deutschlands' in 1928. His work of the 30s exhibits anti-fascist tendencies. Today Heinrich Vogeler is considered one of the most important graphic artists and illustrators of German Art Nouveau.
