Oil on canvas Holger Drachmann (1846-1908) Danish painter and poet Signed and dated 'H Drachmann 1871' lower left Inscribed (partly barely legible) on the stretchers frame ' Ver Scaletta paa (...)kysten af Sicilien' in pencil and dated '1871' in felt pen Dimensions: 42 x 57.8 cm Gilt stucco frame: 69.5 x 87 cm Provenance: Private property, Northern Germany Holger Drachmann's painting of the Sicilian 'Castello di Scaletta' draws attention to the castle of the princes of Scaletta situated above the city and on massive rocks: The view wanders over the southern landscape with agaves, individual hikers and the sea which is very important for the passionate marine painter towards the Italian mainland close to the skyline. Condition: The painting is in good condition, consistent with the age. The varnish is slightly darkened. Overall tiny craquelure can be seen on the canvas and scattered marks, mainly in the upper part. There are areas with scuffing due to the frame along the upper edges and corners of the canvas. The frame shows traces of usage as tears and scratches. Holger Drachmann (1846-1908) Holger Drachmann, born in 1846 in Copenhagen, belongs to the well-known modern Danish poets and worked as well as a marine painter. In the 1860s he started to study at the Royal Academy in Copenhagen and dedicated himself afterwards to journalism, poetry and painting. Several journeys brought him among others to Scotland, England, France and Northern America where he was attentive to social differences. In painting and in writing (nature and love poetry) he focusses on the sea as a subject: Beach, ships and the life of the locals were the most important motives of his work this way the sea became a metaphor for the artist.
