Meese finds his themes and subjects in historical figures or mythology and heroic legends. His visual language is radical and grotesque at the same time. The work is signed and dated in pencil 'Jonathan Meese in 1995' on verso and inscribed 'Meez 829'. It is in very good condition. The sheet is mounted on the top edge at two points (reversible) and framed in a mat. Due to the mounting a light vertical pressure marks in the upper right, otherwise overall of very good impression. The sheet size measures 32 x 24 cm, the framed dimensions are 53 x 44.5 cm. Jonathan Meese (b. 1970) Jonathan Robin Meese was born in 1970 in Tokyo. Due to his eccentric appearance and his diverse work, Meese is one of Germany's best known contemporary artists. He lives in Ahrensburg and Berlin. Meese's work includes painting, sculpture, installation, performance, collage, video art and theater works. From 1995 to 1998, he studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Hamburg with Franz Erhard Walther. Since 1998, he attracted attention with his installations, performances and events, particularly at the Berlin Biennale curated by Klaus Biesenbach. From 1999, Meese participated in numerous national and international exhibitions. His works have been purchased by many major museums, including the Pompidou Centre in Paris, and the Städel Museum in Frankfurt. They are part of important private collections, including the German Collection Falkenberg, the Saatchi Gallery, and the Austrian Essl Collection. One of his works, 'Die Humpty-Dumpty-Maschine der totalen Zukunft' (2010) stands in front of the Alte Nationalgalerie in Berlin.
