Moll began comparatively late and also autodidactically with painting, then finally took private painting lessons in 1897, and was a student of Lovis Corinth, Walter Leistikow and Henri Matisse. The former led him to an impressionist style of painting using muted colors, which is also expressed here in this landscape painting 'Willow trees and windmill' that is further characterized by a slightly thick impasto, applied in linear, colored balance. This painting is considered an early piece of the artist Oskar Moll, whose work later transforms into a more geometric and constructive style, influenced by Cubism. This oil painting by Oskar Moll used to belong to the collection Schäfer in Schweinfurt. The frame carries the inventory number '58437926-73' and the collection label on the back. The Private Collection Schäfer was established by industrialist Georg Schäfer, who since the 1950s, built his collection with a focus on German paintings from the late 18th century to the beginning of the 20th century. It combines the most diverse art movements of this time, from the late Rococo to the Impressionists, including painters such as Carl Spitzweg, Casper David Friedrich and Max Liebermann as well as Lovis Corinth. With the transition of the Collection Schäfer in today's 'Collection-Dr.-Georg-Schäfer-Foundation' in 1997 some works were not transferred and became for sale on the art market, among others at Neumeister in Munich and at Christie's in Dusseldorf, where also our final painting passed into private ownership again. The oil painting is signed lower left 'Oskar Moll' and verso dated '1912'. It is in very good original condition, the surface is minimally dusted due to its age. The frame shows few traces of use as well. The stretcher frame measures 73.5 x 77 cm. The overall framed dimensions are 87 x 90 cm. In 1914 he became a member of the 'Free Secession in Berlin', followed by a professorship at the Academy of Arts and Crafts, where he was Director until its closure in 1932.
