Oskar Moll (1875-1947) The painter Oskar Moll was born in Brieg, Silesia, in 1875. He began his artistic training at the age of 22, first as an autodidact and later as a student of Lovis Corinth, Walter Leistikow and Henri Matisse. In Paris, he was significantly involved in the founding of the Académie Matisse in 1908. In Berlin, he became a member of the ‘Freie Secession’ in 1914. Shortly after he was appointed professor at the Staatliche Akademie für Kunst und Kunstgewerbe in Breslau, where he would be active as its director until its closure in 1932. He then taught at the Academy in Dusseldorf, but he was finally dismissed by the Nazis in 1933 and his works were defamed as ‘degenerate’. Oskar Moll followed the approach of combining the tendencies of Impressionism and Cubism. A selection of his works is now preserved in international collections, such as the Museum Ludwig in Cologne, the Neue Nationalgalerie in Berlin, the Sprengel Museum in Hanover and the Von der Heydt Museum in Wuppertal.
