Charles Warren Eaton American, 1857-1937 Midsummer Signed Chas. Warren Eaton (lr) Oil on canvas 24 x 20 inches Provenance: Estate of the artist Exhibited: New York, Spanierman Gallery, Charles Warren Eaton and Robert Emmett Owen, Dec. 8, 2009-Jan. 16, 2010 Known as the "Pine Tree Painter," Eaton often evoked nostalgia for natural places stoically resisting progress. In Midsummer Night, which demonstrates his incorporation of an Impressionist technique after the turn of the century, he expressed greater optimism. The warm light, the combination of new and old growth trees, and the lively brushwork create an enticing scene. This is enhanced by the path, one easily trod by visitors across flat terrain that satisfyingly leads to a viewpoint overlooking a valley. Until recently, this painting was in Eaton's estate, which was inherited by his childhood friend, Samuel Foster, and passed down to in Foster's family.
