Charles Warren Eaton American, 1857-1937)The Heart of New England, 1905 Signed Chas. Warren Eaton and dated 1905 (ll); inscribed as titled and Chas. Warren Eaton 1905 on the reverse Oil on canvas 30 1/8 x 36 1/4 inches Provenance: Private collection A leading figure in the American Tonalist movement, Charles Warren Eaton was influenced both by the French Barbizon painters and by George Inness, who had a studio adjacent to his in 1889. Eaton is best known for his poetic images of the white pine forests of New England, which he began to paint around 1900. He often portrayed places where trees had grown up over country where other plants had been cut back by grazing. His images of lonely, monolithic stands of trees against the sunset evoke a feeling of sadness for this loss. These subjects led to the artist's becoming known as "The Pine Tree Artist."
