Alfred Kubin (1877-1959) The oeuvre of the Austrian painter, graphic artist, book illustrator and author Alfred Kubin is characterized by the depiction of fantastical dream visions. The ‘Austrian Goya’ was inspired especially by the visionary and symbolic works of James Ensor, Odilon Redon, Edvard Munch, Max Klinger and Francisco de Goya. After gaining increasing notoriety as an illustrator of important literary works (by Edgar Allan Poe, Franz Kafka, Fyodor Dostoyevsky et al.) in the 1920s, and after his work had been defamed as ‘degenerate art’ by the Nazis, his drawings were only appreciated properly in his later years. In the 1950s, he received the Fine Arts Prize from the city of Vienna, the Grand Austrian State Prize, and the Austrian Decoration for Science and Art. Today, Alfred Kubin is considered one of the most important drawers of the 20th century and his works fetch up top prices at international auctions.
