Alfred Kubin (1877 - 1959) The Austrian painter, printmaker, illustrator and author Alfred Kubin's oeuvre is characterized by depictions of phantastical dream visions. The "Austrian Goya" was influenced by visionary and symbolic works by James Ensor, Odilon Redon, Edvard Munch, Max Klinger and also Francisco de Goya. After his work as an illustrator of important world literature (for example by Allan Poe, Franz Kafka, Fjodor Dostojewski) gained international acclaim in the 1920s and his works were defined as "degenerate" by National Socialists, his drawings were only appreciated in his old age. Thus in the 1950s he received an art prize from the city of Vienna, the great Austrian State Prize and the Austrian Badge of Honour. Today Alfred Kubin is one of the most important painters of the 20υth Century.
