Alfred Kubin (1877-1959) The work of the Austrian painter, graphic artist, book illustrator and author Alfred Kubin is characterised by the depiction of fantastical dream visions. The "Austrian Goya" was especially inspired by the visionary and symbolic works of James Ensor, Odilon Redon, Edvard Munch, Max Klinger and also Francisco de Goya. After finding international recognition as an illustrator of important literary works (by Edgar Allan Poe, Franz Kafka, Fyodor Dostoyevsky et al.) in the 1920s and having his work defamed as "degenerate art" by the Nazis, his drawings were only appreciated properly in his later years. In the 1950s, he received the fine arts prize from the city of Vienna, the Grand Austrian State Prize and the Austrian Decoration for Science and Art. Today Alfred Kubin is considered one of the most important draughtsmen of the 20th century and his works fetch up top prices at international auctions.
