MANDELA NELSON: (1918-2013) President of South Africa 1994-99. Nobel Peace Prize winner, 1993. A gold and green short sleeve souvenir Adidas South African Football Association jersey signed to the centre in bold black ink by Mandela and dated 26thNovember 2010 in his hand. Unusual in this form. VG South Africa played host to the FIFA World Cup finals in 2010 and Mandela made a brief appearance at the closing ceremony before the final on 11th July 2010. Mandela had previously spoken of the importance of football in his life, stating that while incarcerated in Robben Island prison playing football ‘made us feel alive and triumphant despite the situation we found ourselves in’.
