ALPHONSE MUCHA (1860-1939) [THE FLOWERS.] 1900. 18x27 inches, 45 3/4x68 1/2 cm. Condition B+: minor restoration in image; overpainting in margins. Matted and framed. These four irresistible allegories of flowers were Mucha's first decorative panels and they began a series that proved to be a unique success story in French printing of the fin-de-siècle. The Flowers were first published in large sizes but Champenois also decided to print a smaller format version for people who had less room in which to enjoy the images. For the project, Mucha surrounded the images with an elaborate, decorative border, virtually turning them into a small screen. Rennert / Weill 49 var 2.
