A Chinese Scroll Painting by Lang Shi Ning (1130 x 54.5cm) Giuseppe Castiglione (1688-1766) was a Jesuit monk and painter from Milan, Italy. In 1715 (the 54th year of the Kangxi reign of the Qing Dynasty), he came to China to preach and immediately became a court painter in the imperial palace. He went through the Kangxi, Yongzheng, and Qianlong dynasties and engaged in painting in China for more than 50 years. He also participated in the design of the Western style building in the Yuanmingyuan and was one of the top ten painters in the Qing Dynasty court.
