Antique map of southern Africa depicting the customs and Habits of the people who live around Cape of Good Hope, with a description of animals and reptiles found in this area. From Chatelain's monumental 7-volume 'Atlas Historique' published in Amsterdam 1705-1720. Chatelain was a Huguenot pastor of Parisian origins. He is most well known for the Atlas Historique, published in seven volumes between 1705 and 1720, devoted to the history and genealogy of the continents, covering such topics as geography, cosmography, topography, heraldry, and ethnography. The maps and plates were largely after the work of Guillaume Delisle, and they offered the general reader a window into the emerging world of the eighteenth century.
