As the title suggests, it is Beethoven's ear. Beethoven had a hearing defect, which ultimately made him deaf. The work is part of a series entitled 'Noses and Ears, Etc.' wherein Baldessari treats the subject of music in relation to painting, photography and sculpture. He once said of the series "perhaps these works can be seen as not painting, photography or sculpture, but a melding of all three". The work is signed and dated lower right 'Baldessari 07' and numbered lower left '30/30'. The print and frame are in good condition with slight signs of wear. The photo paper is slightly warped. The piece measures 120 x 61 (framed); 114 x 55.5 (print size). There is a label verso with information on the artist and the work. John Baldessari (born 1931) The US-American artist John Baldessari is an important representative of contemporary new media and concept art. He was born in 1931 in California and now resides in Santa Monica, LA. The artist studied as an autodidact and now teaches at the University of California in Los Angeles. He gained fame in 1970 with his 'Cremation Project' where he burnt his own paintings in public. He then focused on the exchange between image and language. His oeuvre comprises works of photography, video performances, collages and cut-ups. Baldessari's works were shown at the Biennale in Venice and twice at the Documenta in Kassel.
