Note: '[The present work] is given to the recipients of the CalArts Trustees’ Awards, established in 1990 and granted annually to two outstanding leaders in the arts: one to a CalArts trustee and one to an arts benefactor. From 1992 to 1999, John Baldessari gave as the award a printed photograph version of this image with hand-painted additions. Approximately fourteen unique versions were given during 1992-99 before this edition was printed'' (S.C. Hurowitz and W. Weitman, ''John Baldessari: A Catalogue Raisonne of Prints and Multiples 1971-2007'', Manchester, VT, 2010). This print was awarded to trustee George Boone in 1998. According to a letter from Steven D. Lavine, President of California Institute of the Arts, and dated December 16, 1998, ''[This print] is John Baldessari's interpretation of trusteeship. The top image is the trapeze / high wire act necessary to keep an arts or educational organization going; the middle image suggests the way we all have to play the angles in these complex operations; the bottom image is one of calm deliberation at the Board table, with one Trustee apparently looking at his watch, perhaps with impatience....John created it especially for us; it is full of visual wit and imagination for which he is famous''.
