LÉON CARRÉ (1878-1942) TLEMCEN. 1929. 39½x24½ inches, 100¼x62¼ cm. Baconnier, Algiers. Condition A: minor creases in margins. "In 1909, a scholarship brought Leon Carre to the Villa Abdelatif in Algiers, where he spent the rest of his life. A talented draughtsman and colourist, Carre sought to convey the emotion of the artist's vision in a blend of detail and soft pastel shades. He did a great deal of work as an illustrator, notably on 'Le Mille et Une Nuits,' a masterpiece inspired by oriental miniatures" (Orientalist p. 36). Orientalist p. 37.
