LÉON CARRÉ (1878-1942) TLEMCEN / PLM. 1929. 39 1/4x24 1/2 inches, 99 3/4x62 1/4 cm. Baconnier, Alger. Condition A: minor repaired tears and time-staining in margins. One of at least two posters created by Carré to promote travel to this historically important Algerian city. An Arab Sultanate from 1282-1553, Tlemcen became part of the Ottoman Empire in 1555 and was taken over by the French in 1842. Carré moved to Algeria in 1909 and stayed for the rest of his life, where as "a talented draughtsman and colourist, [he] sought to convey the emotion of the artist's vision in a blend of detail and soft, pastel shades."
