Gelatin silver print, printed ca.1954, signed by the printer R P Petersen and annotated in pencil verso, 33.5 x 26.8cm (13 1/8 x 10 1/2in) Provenance: Family of Man exhibition, 1955 Self-taught in photography, Gjon Mili (1904-1984) graduated in electrical engineering at MIT in 1927 where he worked with Harold Eugene Edgerton. His different approach to photography brought him to be one of the first to use electronic flash and to pioneer the use of stroboscopic light to capture the motion of movement in a photograph which could not be seen for the naked eye and to become a photographer for LIFE magazine for more than four decades.
