ALFRED STIEGLITZ, TWO SILVER GELATIN PHOTOGRAPHS AND AN AUTOGRAPHED LETTER (New York, 1864-1946) from the collection of Katherine Nash Rhoades (New York/Washington D.C., 1885-1965) and passed down within the family to Katherine's grandniece. Katherine was a Modernist painter and part of the Stieglitz Group (a photograph of Katherine by an unknown artist is included with this Lot). The first photograph titled "Bird on Wire" depicting a bird on telephone line, image measures 3-1/2" x 4-1/2", in Stieglitz hand written on verso is "This may amuse you. It's only a proof - If you like it I'll send you a print when finished properly." The second photograph titled "Birds on Wire" depicting a flock of birds on telephone lines, image measures 4-5/8" x 3-1/8", in Stieglitz hand is written on the mounting paper: "They heard the Click and all flew away - but they came back. - Outside the window. - Birds - They send their greetings to their Sister Bird!" dated 1922. Both prints are mounted but unframed. The letter is addressed to the Friends of John Marin and states that the recipient has a $600 credit for one of John Marin's watercolors. John Marin had a long association with Stieglitz, who exhibited his work. The typed letter is signed Alfred Stieglitz and has a handwritten note: "Greetings! I hope you are not being bribed."
