Nicolás Enríquez was a member of the first Academy of painters established in Mexico circa 1722 by the brothers Nicolás and Juan Rodríguez Juárez, and he is considered one of the best artists painting on copper of the time. As the ARCA website reports, “his paintings show his skill in the use of color and technique, within the conventions of colonial art during the 18th century”. The Metropolitan Museum of New York acquired a series of five oil paintings on copper by the Mexican painter Nicolás Enríquez in 2014, to enrich its collection of New Spanish art. This series was commissioned from Enríquez in 1773 by the Basque merchant Juan Bautista Echeverría. “La Gaceta de México”, an outstanding newspaper at the time this painter was active, mentions him on two occasions, describing his work as ‘magnificent and of very high value’, economically and artistically, which is clearly evident in these two paintings of devotion and outstanding execution.
