Birger Sandzen (Kansas, 1871-1954) Pines by the Lake, Estes Park 1923 The Rocky Mountain landscape with wind-worn pines beside a sub-alpine lake in Estes Park is signed lower right front; titled, dated and signed again verso in the artist's hand. Scholars have divided Birger Sandzen's body of work into different periods of style and subject emphasis. The Sandzen Memorial Gallery web site at Sandzen.org sums it up best: Middle Years (1910-1929). '' This period is often considered the most dynamic and important of Sandzen's career. Kansas and Colorado landscapes came to the forefront during this time and his importance and recognition as a painter increased.'' Source: Sandzen Archives, Birger Sandzen Memorial Gallery, Lindsborg, KS. The present painting, a handsome Colorado view from 1923, fits very neatly within this golden era of the artist's body of work and carries exceptional provenance. The Birger Sandzen Memorial Gallery archives confirm that #2437, Pines by the Lake, Estes Park, Colorado, 1923, was sold from the Gallery collection prior to 1993 and held in the collection of Jack Goldstein from at least 1998 until his passing. The work itself measures 24 x 18 inches, the framed size is 34 x 28.
