Artist: Birger Sandzén | 1871 - 1954 TSA Title: In the Mountains, Colorado (Rocky Mountain National Park) Signed l/r: Birger Sandzén Media: Oil on panel Dimensions: 25 by 30 inches Verso: In the Mountains (Rocky Mountain National Park) Colo. Birger Sandzén, Lindsborg, Kansas 1945. Inscribed lower right: In October 1946 I went to the school (Lindsborg) where Sandzén taught. Verla Baird Nesbitt Joscelyn took me as she had attended Lindsborg and knew the Sandzéns. Mr. S was tall, grey hair, intense blue eyes - I had wanted a Kansas scene but loved the colors in this one. Signed Susanna M Nesbit Kesler, written Feb 22 - 1962 Born in Sweden, Birger Sandzén received his formal art education in Europe and emigrated in 1894 to Lindsborg, Kansas where he taught at Bethany College until 1946. He first painted in Colorado in 1916. He also traveled and painted extensively in New Mexico and Colorado. In addition to the many painting trips to Colorado, he also taught art at the Broadmoor Academy in Colorado Springs (presently Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center) and at Chappell House which was to become the Denver Art Museum. Sandzéns market received a significant boost as a result of having two exhibitions at Babcock Galleries in New York. The present offering, Rocky Mountain National Park is typical of the heavy application of impasto and bright colors that he used in creating his distinctive interpretation of the Western United States landscape. Through his art and teaching, Sandzén became an advocate for art in the region and influenced a generation of artists. Provenance: Acquired from the artist by Sue Nesbitt Kesler, 1946 Descent to Jeanne Kesler Benn, 1970s California collector, 2010
