Eugenio Gignous, Milano 1850 - Stresa (VB) 1906 (Milan 1850 - Stresa (VB) 1906) - Eugenio Gignous was born in Milan on August 4, 1850, to Laurent, a silk merchant originally from the Dauphiné, and Maria Taveggia Brizzolara, from Milan. From a young age he manifested a marked inclination for drawing, which led him to enroll in 1864 at the Brera Academy of Fine Arts, where he attended the school of ornamentation and later the school of landscape painting under the guidance of Luigi Riccardi and Gaetano Fasanotti .During his formative years, Gignous came into contact with the milieu of the Milanese Scapigliatura, making friends with artists such as Tranquillo Cremona and Daniele Ranzoni. These acquaintances influenced his style, leading him to experiment with en plein air painting characterized by vivid color rendering and research into the effects of light .In 1870 he made his debut at the XXIX Exposition of the Society for Fine Arts in Turin with the work "Lavandaie della Magolfa." In the following years, he devoted himself mainly to landscape painting, producing views of the Lombard and Piedmontese countryside, often in the company of artist friends such as Luigi Rossi and Achille Tominetti .Toward the end of the 1870s, Gignous moved toward a more pronounced naturalism, influenced by the research of Filippo Carcano. Together with the latter, in 1879, he began to paint on Lake Maggiore, inaugurating a thematic repertoire devoted to views of Verbano, Mottarone and the Ossola Valley .In 1887 he moved with his wife Matilde Ferri and their five children to Stresa, where he frequented the cultural milieu of Lake Maggiore and continued to portray mountain and lake landscapes. During this period, he opened a studio frequented by young pupils, including Camilla Bellorini and Maria Zinelli .Gignous participated in numerous national and international exhibitions, including the 1881 Milan National Exhibition, the 1883 Rome Exhibition, and the 1895 I International Venice Exhibition. Some of his works were purchased by King Umberto I and the Ministry of Education .Stricken by throat cancer, Eugenio Gignous died in Stresa on August 30, 1906.
