Oil on canvas, 22 x 36 inches. Signed and dated "A. Jacobsen 1898/ 31 Palisade Av West Hoboken NJ" l.r.The screw pilot boat "New York" was built by Harlan & Hollingsworth at Wilmington, Delaware for the New York & Sandy Hook Pilots in 1897. The following year, she would have escorted the U.S.S. Brooklyn and the U.S.S. New York into New York harbor. Both were flagships that played a key role in the Battle of Santiago de Cuba during the Spanish-American War.
