Oil on canvas, 30 x 50 inches. Signed and dated "Antonio Jacobsen 1888/ 705 Palisades Av West Hoboken NJ," l.r.Built in 1888 at Glasgow for the Inman Line, the triple-masted and funnel stacked "City of New York" was designed, along with her sister ship, "City of Paris," to be the largest and fastest ocean liner on the Atlantic, competing against the Cunard and White Star lines. She was christened by Lady Randolph Churchill on March 15, 1888, but it took until August 1892 for the ship to win the Blue Riband for speed on the eastbound crossing to Liverpool.
