Nizar Kamal Ariffin was born on September 9, 1964 in Kuala Lipis, Pahang. He is an alumnus of Fine Arts from Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) and he began his career by working with the Ministry of Culture and Youth, and was appointed resident artist of Taman Seni Budaya Pahang. In 1993, he moved to Kuala Lumpur and joined Angkatan Pelukis Malaysia. His passion for painting was fuelled by his desire to soul-search, leading him to re flect his findings through his artworks. His works has been exhibited in many renowned exhibitions in Malaysia as well as Singapore. NizarÕs Topeng Series is predominantly set in square format, seeking some kind of resolution from the faces of humans and their humanity, besides self-introspection
