Samuel Brecher, American, 1897-1982, "The Bridge in Cuernavaca, Mexico", 20th century, oil on canvas, signed on recto at lower left Provenance: Marbella Gallery, New York, New York, Simpson's Fine Art and Antiques label on verso (Houston, 9/11/2005, lot 74) Note: A Tribute to the International Alliance Art School label on verso Note: Mildred Thaler Cohen, 1921 - 2012. Ms. Cohen, an alumna of New York's Hunter College, and her first husband began the collection in the late '50s, at a time when American paintings were not recognized as important works of art. The paintings were collected with passion and hung in the family's home. After her first husband's death, Ms. Cohen opened the Marbella Gallery on 72nd Street in Manhattan, specializing in 19th century American painting, but the collection remained a connoisseur’s collection. Hung in her gallery and adjoining apartment, it was a personal reflection of a dedicated collector. Cohen was also a respected writer and acknowledged expert in traditional American fine art. Selections from her collection were donated to the Mattatuck Museum in Waterbury Connecticut. (EV 121) {MARB3416} (AM )
