S. BRECHER OIL PAINTING STILL LIFE OF FLOWERS: Samuel Brecher. (b. 1897-1982), titled "Vase of Flowers", this image depicts two figures in the background lifting heir noses to smell the blooming flowers in the foreground, Oil and Mixed Media on Paper, Signed L.L., framed: 27.25" h x 21.5" w (69.85 cm x 54.61 cm). Label on verso reads, "A Tribute to the Educational Alliance Art School" Brecher's estate contributed to this organization. Brecher was born in Poland and he and his family moved to New York in 1910, where he graduated from Cooper Union in 192. He studied Art at the National Academy of Design from 1921 to 1924, and continued studies under Charles W. Hawthorne in Provincetown, Massachusetts. Brecher was an accomplished artist, winning many awards and teaching for the WPA teaching project in 1933 - 1938 and the Newark School of Fine & Industrial Art 1946 - 1974. His work can be found in the permanent collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Walker Art Museum, the Smithsonian and the Newark Museum of Art. Brecher exhibited with the Salmagundi Club, Allied Artists, Carnegie Institute, National Academy of Design, and the San Francisco Museum.
