Burger’ Dimensions: 60.5 x 80.5 cm Good condition Provenance: Private collection, Bavaria Anton Burger is one of the most interesting and versatile representatives of the Kronberg painters; his landscapes show particular areas in Frankfurt, the Taunus and the Rhine-Main region Condition: The painting is in a good condition, consistent with age. The edges show light marks with tiny losses of paint, due to framing. Inspection under UV light reveals scattered and very small areas of retouching to the lower half. The stretcher measures 60.5 x 80.5 cm. Anton Burger (1824-1905) Anton Burger was born in Frankfurt in 1824. From 1842 to 1846 he studied at the Städel Art Institute. At the urging of his teacher Philipp Veit he left for Munich but returned to Frankfurt two years later. In 1853 he undertook a study trip to Paris, where he met Camille Corot and Gustave Courbet. Together with Jakob Fürchtegott Dielmann he founded the Kronberg painters’ colony in 1861. Burger primarily painted landscapes but also portraits and genre paintings as well as etchings. He was highly respected and was appreciatively named the ‘King of Kronberg’. His works were sought after, even abroad, and he was honored with numerous awards.
