Lacquer on canvas Tanzania, c. 1994 George Lilanga (1934-2005) – Tanzanian artist Signed lower right ‘Lilanga’, titled on the back in Swahili Dimensions: 93 x 72 cm Good condition The Tanzanian artist George Lilanga depicts on his work of lacquer on canvas five shetani, African ghosts. They are presented in different colors and wear patterned skirts. The artist works with geometrical and ornamental shapes as well as monochrome color fields. The work is signed lower right ‘Lilanga’. On the back it is titled in Swahili. It is in good condition with signs of age and use. It measures 93 x 72 cm. (lez) George Lilanga George Lilanga was born 1934 in Nandimba, Mozambique. As a refugee in Tanzania he was dedicated to the art of the Makonde and represented this culture in various techniques and materials, such as sculptures, paintings and etchings. His works were exhibited in Europe, Asia, Africa and USA, for example the Guggenheim Museum, Bilbao, Spain, the Hiroshima City Modern Art Museum in Japan and the Museum of Fine Art in Houston, USA.
