Metal, lacquer Tanzania, c. 1996 George Lilanga (1934-2005) – Tanzanian artist Signed lower left ‘Lilanga’ Dimensions: 122 x 75 cm (height x width) Good condition The Tanzanian artist George Lilanga depicts on his work of lacquer a shetani and a three-headed woman. The impression of the work is enhanced by its threedimensionality. Its reticulated pattern makes the wall behind visible. The work is signed lower right ‘Lilanga’. On the back it is titled in Swahili. It is in good condition with signs of age and wear. It measures 122 x 75 cm. (lez) George Lilanga George Lilanga was born 1934 in Nandimba, Mozambique. As a refugee in Tanzania he was dedicated to the art of the Makonde and represented this culture in various techniques and materials, such as sculptures, paintings and etchings. His works were exhibited in Europe, Asia, Africa and USA, for example the Guggenheim Museum, Bilbao, Spain, the Hiroshima City Modern Art Museum in Japan and the Museum of Fine Art in Houston, USA.
