Lacquer on canvas Tanzania, around 1996 George Lilanga (1934-2005) – Tanzanian artist Signed lower right ‘Lilanga’, titled on the back in Swahili Dimensions: 192 x 142 cm Good condition The Tanzanian artist George Lilanga depicts on his work of lacquer on canvas shetani, African ghosts. The numerous figures are shattered across the entire picture area. On the upper rim a village is indicated. Lilanga works with geometrical and ornamental shapes as well as monochrome color fields. The work is signed lower right ‘Lilanga’. On the back it is titled in Swahili. It is in good condition with signs of age and wear. It measures 192 x 142 cm. (lez) George Lilanga George Lilanga was born 1934 in Nandimba, Mozambique. As a refugee in Tanzania he was dedicated to the art of the Makonde and represented this culture in various techniques and materials, such as sculptures, paintings and etchings. His works were exhibited in Europe, Asia, Africa and USA, for example the Guggenheim Museum, Bilbao, Spain, the Hiroshima City Modern Art Museum in Japan and the Museum of Fine Art in Houston, USA.
