Lacquer on calabash Tanzania, around 1998 George Lilanga (1934-2005) – Tanzanian artist Signed ‘Lilanga’ Diameter: 33 cm Good condition The Tanzanian artist George Lilanga has designed the calabash with lacquer. The painting depicts shetani on brown background. The upper part of the calabash is painted blue. The two color fields are separated by a white border-line. It is decorated with further ornamental and geometric forms. The calabash can be put at the ceiling. The item is signed ‘Lilanga’ on the picture surface. It is in good condition with signs of age and wear. It’s diameter is 33 cm. George Lilanga George Lilanga was born 1934 in Nandimba, Mozambique. As a refugee in Tanzania he was dedicated to the art of the Makonde and represented this culture in various techniques and materials, such as sculptures, paintings and etchings. His works were exhibited in Europe, Asia, Africa and USA, for example the Guggenheim Museum, Bilbao, Spain, the Hiroshima City Modern Art Museum in Japan and the Museum of Fine Art in Houston, USA.
