Operating from 1847-1937, the Fall River Line provided a combination steamboat-railroad link between Boston and New York City. Passengers would depart Boston by train in the late afternoon, board a boat at Fall River in time to dine at sea while steaming down Narragansett Bay past Newport, then turn in for the evening while crossing Long Island Sound and the next morning, step off at the line's Hudson River pier. The steamboats, exemplars of travel in the Gilded Age with ornate and luxurious interiors, attracted passengers ranging from U.S. Presidents to the Vanderbilts, Astors and Rockefellers.
