The motivation of a painting lies in the organization of color and form, as well as in the sorting of all these different impulses.’ The present painting reveals how sensual this approach turns sometimes out to be, when the artist examines his model in his studio. Condition: The painting is in very good overall condition, showing only minor traces of use along the frame. The stretcher measures 179.5 x 149.5 cm and the framed overall dimensions are 199 x 168.5 cm. Harald Metzkes (b. 1929) The painter Harald Metzkes was born in Bautzen in 1929. He was first trained as a stonemason and attended the Academy of Fine Arts in Dresden, from 1949 to 1953. He graduated as a master student of Otto Nagel at the Academy of Arts in Berlin in 1955. He finally established himself as a freelance painter in East Berlin in 1959. His works were repeatedly awarded, including the Käthe Kollwitz Prize, the ‘Nationalpreis der DDR für Illustration und Grafik’ and the Hannah Höch Prize. Besides, Metzkes was represented at the Venice Biennale in 1984 as well as at the exhibition ‘Kunst in der DDR‘ held at the Nationalgalerie in Berlin.
