Oil on canvas GDR, 1989 Harald Metzkes (b. 1929) - German Painter, master student of Otto Nagel Signed and dated lower left in red 'Metzkes 1989' Dimensions: 90 x 121 cm Good Condition Multi-figured composition, executed in vigorous ductus and muted color palette with modest light accentuations The painting presented here was created in 1989 by the artist Harald Metzkes. In large format the painter presents a wide landscape on which a derby is about to take place. Jockeys gather with their horses on the racing lawn, seemingly in a tense mood, as it is expressed by the movement of the horse as well as in the dynamic ductus. The rather muted color palette is broken here and there by some bright accents due to the incident light. The painting is signed and dated lower left '1989 Metzkes'. Occasionally smaller color flaking in the upper area of the sky as well as on the outer edges left and right, otherwise in good condition. The image size measures 90 x 121 cm. The framed size is 103 x 133 cm. Harald Metzkes (b. 1929) Painter Harald Metzkes was born in Bautzen in 1929. After he was taught as a stonemason, he studied from 1949-53 at the Academy of Fine Arts in Dresden and graduated in 1955 as a master student of Otto Nagel at the Academy of Arts in Berlin. From 1959 he worked successfully as a freelance painter in East Berlin. In addition, he was awarded the Käthe Kollwitz Prize of the Academy of Arts of the GDR and also participated in the Venice Biennale in 1984.
