The motivation of a painting lies in the organization of color and form, as well as in the sorting of all these different impulses.’ The present female nude is presented in the role of ‘Lucretia’ and unveils that Metzkes dealt with the great iconographic themes in the same artistic approach. Condition: The painting is in good overall condition; the paint surface shows a few areas of craquelure and the frame is affected by minor traces of use. The stretcher measures 180 x 150 cm and the frame 195 x 165 cm. Harald Metzkes (b. 1929) The painter Harald Metzkes was born in Bautzen in 1929. He was first trained as a stonemason and attended the Academy of Fine Arts in Dresden, from 1949 to 1953. He graduated as a master student of Otto Nagel at the Academy of Arts in Berlin in 1955. He finally established himself as a freelance painter in East Berlin in 1959. His works were repeatedly awarded, including the Käthe Kollwitz Prize, the ‘Nationalpreis der DDR für Illustration und Grafik’ and the Hannah Höch Prize. Besides, Metzkes was represented at the Venice Biennale in 1984 as well as at the exhibition ‘Kunst in der DDR‘ held at the Nationalgalerie in Berlin.
