Signed 'W Gilles' in black lower right. We would like to thank Marlis Schwengers Zilkens, Cologne, for confirmatory information. The present work originates from the early period of Gille's stays on the island of Ischia. The painting's seemingly abbreviated motifs are comparable to those in the "Ischialandschaft" in the Kunstmuseum Mühlheim a.d.R. (cf. exhib. cat.
