The Italian island of Ischia was of eminent importance for Werner Gilles since his first trip to the island in 1931. Marlis Schwengers, author of the catalogue raisonné, states in this context that the discovery of the landscape, which is characterized by lava and hot springs, which shaped the island and also the love for the fishing village of Sant'Angelo were a decisive experience for his artistic work. (our painting is not listed in Schwengers). Furthermore, the painting presented here illustrates the increasing stylization of objects and figures, as well as the more extensive way of painting which characterizes Gilles later works. In addition to that our painting was also already presented in exhibitions at the Stuttgart Kunstkabinett, Roman Norbert Ketterer, auction no. 22 in 1955, cat.no. 1141; there called 'Hügelige Landschaft mit Häusern' (on the stretcher with the handwritten auction label) as well as at the Kunsthandlung Theodor Heller, Munich. The painting is signed lower right „W. Gilles". At the outer left it shows 2 faint horizontal scratches and a tiny dent in the canvas, otherwise the work is overall in very good condition.
