Dimensions: 47 x 63 cm Very good condition Provenance: Private collection, Germany Drawing from the series of typical Gilles works with Ischia motifs, which were created by the artist since his first visit in 1931 over several decades; works in paper with Ischia subjects fetch up to €6,500 on the international auction market This drawing on Ingres wove paper by the artist Werner Gilles shows an Ischia scenery, which is a compelling motif for the artist. The Italian island of Ischia was of eminent importance for Werner Gilles since his first trip to the island in 1931. Marlis Schwengers, author of the catalogue raisonné, states in this context that ‘the discovery of the landscape, which is characterized by lava and hot springs, shaping the island and also the love for the fishing village of Sant'Angelo, had a decisive influence on his work.’ (Our painting is not recorded in Schwengers) The drawing is signed lower right ‘WGilles’. The sheet is mounted at four points reversible into a mat and framed. The depiction is in impeccable condition, it only shows marginal wear with small tears and foxing on the back. In the corners are pinholes. The frame is slightly bumped on the edges. The sheet measures 47 x 63 cm and the overall dimensions, including the frame, are 63 x 83 cm. Werner Gilles (1894-1961) Werner Gilles was born in 1894 in Rheydt near Mönchengladbach. After his military service he studied at the Academy in Weimar under Walther Klemm, however, switched then to the Bauhaus short time later where he became a student of Lyonel Feininger and made friends with Oskar Schlemmer as well as Gerhard Marcks. After his studies he traveled extensively to Italy and stayed for some time in Düsseldorf, Berlin and Paris. Especially the Italian island of Ischia had quite the effect on the artist. As a result it served as a motif in many of his works. In the early years of his career, his way of painting was based on the expressionists of the Blaue Reiter, yet it developed into a more academic and classical style in the end of the 1930s and then eventually turned back to a stylized and more extensive style during the post-war period.
