His paintings stand in the tradition of Romantic landscape painting with brilliantly rendered lighting effects, at the same time capturing an intuitive impression of nature. Condition: Overall light craquelure, small retouching in the center of the image, slight abrasions on the edges due to the framing, otherwise overall of good impression. The image size is 23.5 x 32 cm, the framed dimensions 37 x 45 cm. Lev Feliksovič Lagorio (1826-1905) Born in 1826 in Crimea Lagorio took his first drawing lessons in 1839 with the marine painter Ivan Konstantinovič Ajvazovskij. In 1843 he began his studies at the Academy of St. Petersburg, trained by Aleksandr Ivanovich Zauervejd, Maksim Nikiforovič Vorob'ev and Bogdan Pavlovič Villeval'de. This is followed by study trips to the Caucasus, Paris and Rome. Upon his return to St. Petersburg in 1860 he was appointed professor of landscape painting. He regularly travelled through Russia and further to Constantinople. In 1900 he became as an honorary member of the Academy. Lagorio is regarded an important representative of the Russian academicism and painted with preference landscapes and marine subjects.
