It depicts the landing of a boat on the Crimean coast at the Black Sea. Lagorio had a studio in Sudak in the Crimea, where he liked to work during the summer months. In the center of the painting is shown the berthing boat, while in the distance is still visible the departing ship. The surging waters break on the bow of the boat, from which the passengers go ashore, some of them carrying their luggage with them. A sailor carries on his shoulders a passenger to the shore, where is located a large sailboat. Onshore, the passengers are awaited by Russian coast residents, Cossacks and Crimean Tatars. With brilliance, Lagorio has captured the light and the special colors of the sea, sometimes silver-colored, sometimes white-foaming and sometimes with numerous shades. The painting is signed and dated in Cyrillic lower left, 'Lagorio 1873'. The back of the frame shows old adhesive labels with information on the provenance and the artist as well as a stamp of the framer (Cyrillic: 'Fabrika Ram ' L. Beggrova ( ... ) St. Petersburg '). The painting is in good overall condition with minimal craquelure, faint framing marks and areas of abrasion, especially to the sky. Inspection under UV light reveals large areas of retouching to the left and upper edge, as well as tiny points of retouching to the water, the figures and the sky. The bow of the boat shows a major retouched area. The original frame has only a few small nicks. The overall dimensions, framed, are 71 x 102 cm. The stretcher measures 40 x 71 cm. The painting has been in family ownership since over 100 years. It was acquired by an ancestor of the family, Carl Emil Weber (Vice Consul in St. Petersburg), and his wife Elisabeth Weber (born Hauff), probably directly from the artist in the 1870s in St. Petersburg. The children of the vice consul settled in Germany in 1914. Since then, it has been inherited. Lagorio took part in the Caucasian War, painting there especially coastal and mountain landscapes. From 1852, he studied for several years in Italy. In his later works, he painted in particular coastal landscapes in Finland and Norway, as well as scenes from the Russian-Turkish war. Promoted by the Tsar, he was awarded with several gold and silver medals of the Academy of Arts.
