The currently highest auction record for a similar painting by Helmuth Liesegang is around €7,000 The present oil painting is the work of the German painter Helmuth Liesegang (1858-1945) and depicts a forest landscape in a variety of shades in green. The countless color spots form a dense structure of leaves and branches. A small clearing in warm earth tones conducts to a lake glittering in the sunlight. Almost imperceptibly a woman can be discerned in the right area; her face and her body are only vaguely indicated. Liesegang is considered a forerunner of the Impressionists, whose atmospheric landscapes are represented here as a prime example. The painting is signed 'H Liesegang' lower right and mounted in a partly gilt wood frame. It is in very good condition with some minor wear. The panel is slightly warped due to age, and the frame shows only minor signs of use. The painting measures 26.5 x 35,5 cm, the framed dimensions are 35,5 x 43,5 cm. Helmuth Liesegang (1858-1945) Liesegang grew up in Kleve, a small city in the Lower Rhine area, from where he very soon started to visit the Academy in Düsseldorf. One of his teachers was Eugen Dücker. When he finished his studies, he started travelling and went to Paris (1885 together with Arthur Kampf), Belgium and the Netherlands, where he got to know many important painters, including Max Liebermann, who he met in Katwijk. The painter Olof Jernberg belonged to his closer friends. He returned to his home area, and the nature of the Lower Rhine region became his most important subject. He fled the bombardments during World War II and went to Leipzig where he lived until 1945, named a professor beforehand. He has been awarded many prices and honors during his lifetime.
